We have switched from A Family of Faith to
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) for PK - 6th Grade
CGS uses hands-on materials to assist the child in knowledge of liturgy and Scripture. Children meet weekly in a specially prepared environment called an atrium. In the atrium, adult catechists present materials to the children, either individually or in a small group, allowing them to work with and meditate on Scripture and the different prayers and gestures of the liturgies. They also learn about the life of the Church, including the liturgical seasons and calendar, the habits of practicing Catholics, and other things.
They primarily learn through their work with materials, personal and communal prayer, and discussion. Because children can return to the different presentations and materials and become immersed in the prayers and passages of Scripture, the program becomes a form of Lectio Divina for them.
There are three levels corresponding to the different ages and natural developmental levels of the children. Each CGS Catechist has a minimum of 90 hours of training. You can learn more about CGS at CGSUSA.org. Even if a child has not attended the previous levels, they are able to join at any age without prior experience.
